First, I support the points you made about processing spiritual and transformational intentions as the basis for understanding ones desires in the physical realm. Being a student of higher thought, I feel this is the reason why I was able to "digest" the manner in which the movie was made without getting stuck on the material examples given in the movie about manifestation.
I have to admit that I am feeling really tired of all the focus on this aspect of the movie. The movie goes into much more depth and covers a number of very important topics. I believe that the way it was done was perfect-they needed to find a way to get the message out that would have a more main stream/mass appeal-and it has worked! Being a film, it had to be interesting with visually stimulating images that would keep a viewer’s attention. With all do respect, I doubt that depicting people doing their “inner work” or meditating would be that exciting visually. I think the movie has been able to break through one of the major obstacles that other wonderful higher thought films, such as “What the Bleep” and “Conversations with God” have had in term of appealing to the masses-either too “heady” and not enough information to help people apply ideas immediately, or just too narrow of a target audience, or both. What I am sensing from some of the other "spiritual leaders" in the world that were not included in the movie as teachers is perhaps some projected jealousy that in such a short time, a totally unknown group of people from Australia were able to produce such a wonderful film that has taken the world by storm, and the resulting vast exposure the teachers in the movie are now receiving.
My feeling about the so-called "material" focus in the movie is what I stated earlier; 1-A way to appeal to more people-the "average" Joe/Jane Blow person (and I don’t mean that as an insult-hopefully my meaning is understood) who has perhaps had no previous exposure to some of the "spiritual" or new thought concepts, and/or quantum physics, that are expounded upon in these types of forums. 2) The material depictions are EXAMPLES-that's all. It gets the ball rolling. I am shocked that some of those who have studied "higher thought" spiritual concepts would not grasp that and be able move on to the deeper messages in the movie. 3) So called “spirituality” students need to realize that not everyone has had exposure or openness to some of the more mind expansive concepts such as being of service, helping others, gaining fulfillment from within first, daily gratitude, etc. It is important to not become a “spiritual snob” and understand that everyone is at a different place-I feel the producers of the movie were trying to keep this understanding in mind and meet a “mass” amount of people where they are currently AT in regards to the modern day issues that are important to many. I feel they have achieved a perfect balance of getting a powerful message across in a mainstream up to date format. Bravo to them!
The movie covers ALOT of material in 90 minutes, so the expectation that every single aspect and issue will be covered is not fair. I also sense that they will be producing more movies on the subject, and will take all of the "critiques" under consideration. Also, the book goes into more depth on these issues. The movie contains an ENTIRE SECTION on how this knowledge can change our world conditions. Why is this fact being ignored by you and the other critiques?
What I find disappointing is your feeling that "that it takes quite a lot of energy to create through the law of attraction." I am not sure what you mean by this, but we are always putting a lot of energy towards creating something all of the time anyway-so why not learn to use that same energy to create intentionally towards good things? Isn't that what we are learning here-that we ARE all powerful energy beings? I feel like your comments are limiting people as to what they are able to achieve and realize about themselves, and that bothers me.
I am also disturbed by your thought that "It will create a lot of false expectations and cause a lot of disappointment, not to mention self-induced guilt about not being "spiritual enough" to make it work in the ways depicted in the video." I really disagree with this statement. Why are you putting this thought out there? I feel it can create great HOPE for people. That is what it has done for me. Again, by stating this you are placing LIMITS on what people are able to do. How do you know that this will occur? Additionally, if one has daily GRATITUDE for what one already has in life, then feelings of false expectations, disappointment, and self induced guilt would gradually disappear anyway because the focus is on generating good feelings about what you feel good about in your life NOW. The Secret does an excellent job of addressing this issue. Moreover, there have been TONS of wonderful stories, on The Secret website and elsewhere, of how this knowledge has changed people lives, creating feelings of happiness and excitement about the future, and if anything, many are FEELING BETTER. Isn’t that what we all want rather than dreading each day? I have my own stories! So saying that this will create “disappointment” is more dangerous to me because it is simply not accurate and it is, I feel, a very limiting statement.
The main message the movie is telling us is that anything is possible and that we are magnificent. What is wrong with that? Nowhere in it does it say "You suck if you can't make this work." I feel someone who chooses to hear that as THE message in the movie and ignore everything else it is saying, has some unresolved issues in those areas. The fact of the matter is-we ARE responsible for what comes into our lives…that is the way the Universe is set up. I am not negating feelings or tragedy that occurs, but if we can begin to understand why these "terrible" things happen in the first place, wouldn't this be the best news ever, in order to really CHANGE these things forever? To know that we are not at the effect of random events but that we have all the power? And not just in our own lives-but for the entire world! People get confused and defensive thinking this is all about “blame” or saying those that died on 9/11 or the victims of Katrina or the Holocaust were to blame for those events. WRONG! That is NOT what the movie has said at all. That thinking is VICTIM mentality. Yes, those events were horrible but they do not have to keep happening. This IS about TRUE KNOWLEDGE that can change everything and help PREVENT more horrific world tragedies from happening ever again.
I think people get all bent out of shape about this part of the law of attraction because they realize or cannot accept that they have ALL the power to create. It is the whole "victim" energy that a lot of people (and I can certainly relate!) and our society as a whole, do not want to let go of. It is very hard to LET GO of being the victim. What they are missing is that accepting this knowledge and letting go of being a victim and blaming others IS the real power. If anything, your Radical Forgiveness concepts are directly related to the ideas in the movie.
I do not feel that any aspect of this movie is "dangerous" whatsoever. It can get people thinking in ways they have never allowed themselves to think before! I feel this is WONDERFUL. It still amazes me how people get UPSET when hearing the truth-I mean, Jesus was working miracles and telling people to love each other, and look what happened to him! I guess there were those at that time who did not like the "form" of his message, and he was ultimately executed for this. However, now, 2000 years later, his is generally considered a great teacher- and a deity by some belief systems, and an entire holiday is centered on him!
I also feel that we should be praising and focusing all of the wonderful messages in the film-that fact that it can inspire hope and joy, starting the path, for those who are willing, to change their lives, and have a deeper understanding of who they really are on a spiritual level-which is UNLIMITED!
It must be understood that if you tell people they are unlimited and have been given total power by the Universe, God, etc., they will react by either jumping for joy, getting really scarred, defensive and lash out, or somewhere in between.
I also do not feel there is anything wrong with having an abundant life in all areas. That being said, I do agree that it is vitally important that people do their "inner work" (whatever that may entail) along with asking for what they want materially. As I mentioned, I am a long time “spiritual” student, AND I would like material abundance. I do not agree with the notion that to be truly spiritual we need to shun wonderful material things. I feel that the Universe wants us to have “things” in this realm that will help us to BE HAPPY and have fun. God wants us to be happy and have fun! And through THAT-along with a greater understanding of ourselves-we WILL be of service to others simply by giving joy through our state of happiness. ALSO-If I have more money-then I have MORE money and resources to help others. It is all part of the perfect plan.
The movie ALSO clearly and beautifully states that not everyone wants the same “things” anyway. I may want a downtown loft or the man of my dreams, but a woman in Indonesia may desire the perfect boat to travel down the river or plenty of food for her children.
I appreciate your books and your work; however I felt a strong desire to counter some of your comments about the movie. I consider The Secret one more wonderful method or "form", along with many others, to help attain inner peace and true joy. I absolutely love it and will continue to support it.

Another thought that I believe needs to be included is the FACT that many of us do not obtain the powers of manifesting OVERNIGHT even though the possibility is there. It is a journey, life is a journey and learning - gaining knowledge - experience - life lessons is the reason we showed up on this planet. Therefore, the secret is more honestly portrayed if we are being honest with ourselves in the process of growing and being the type of person that does not need a secret but the TRUTH that is hidden among the everyday messages of life. For example if the media propogates a new product in the market place, how many people manifest it into their personal posessions? The answer is obvious and so is the secret once you understand it. Thanks to everyone for bringing it back to our attention. Now what are we to do with the media???? That is where the real work lies!

Dear Colin,
I really like your work of Radical Forgiveness. In your blog about "The Secret" you say, "It’s all about us.... Without there being anything approaching a self-transcending mission there is complete a lack of any real notion of helping others."
I have a few thoughts on that point. One is that, only our egos "think" there is a need to "help" others, or that we could know what it is another soul would need in order to evolve along their path. To think that something "should" be different than it is, is to be out of alignment with Truth, or what is. That is not to say that one would never be moved to help another, but that movement would arise spontaneously if it were coming from Source rather than ego. My second thought regards the quest for personal satisfaction of material needs attainment. This, in my experience, is a necessary beginning step in the process of spiritual development moving toward surrender to Source. One must have the truly personal experiences over and over again to realize it is not a "fluke" to "ask and receive". When one continuously has that experience of asking for their preference, letting go of attachment to the result showing up as they think it should or as they want it, and being willing to receive in what ever way Source or the Universe, or God, (whatever one prefers to call the Beneficent Force) wants to give it, then we find, over and over that this Force knows so much better than we personally do, what it is we are truly wanting and gives it to us in that way. This leads to trust, gratitude and surrender. It is something that must be tried and experienced over and over again. "The Secret" is recommending starting at the beginning as I see it. Those who are ready will try it. Those who are not, will scoff at it until they are ready. We can't force evolution in others as much as our egos would like to.

The idea of something so important finally gaining more mainstream recognition is definitely something to celebrate. Of course, I also agree with you that there may be people who become frustrated or discouraged for a variety of reasons. Personally, I don't think that the movie and the book are enough to help someone really put the Law of Attraction into practice. Certainly it will get you sort of pysched, but what about after that initial excitement and enthusiasm wears off? People need tools/resources to put this all into practical practice. The other thing not covered in any depth is what to do when you know you are faced with a significant block? You can viualize and positively affirm all you want, but if you have something else getting in the way you've got to get rid of it first before you can move to that place of "allowing" what you really want to show up. That's why I think pretty much everyone needs Radical Forgiveness followed by Radical Manifestation.

Your work is fabulous, Colin! I cannot brag about you enough, because my life is so much the better - TRULY - since your work found me.
